Target muscles
Rotational swings are powered from the ground up: the glutes and hips generate the drive, the obliques and core transmit the rotational force, and the shoulders and arms guide the RAM across the body. It trains the rotational power chain that underpins throwing, swinging and striking in sport, all in a dynamic full-body movement.
How to perform
Setup
Hold the RAM by the handles with both hands in front of the body, feet shoulder-width or slightly wider, knees soft, core braced.
Execution
Hinge slightly and swing the RAM down and across to one hip, then drive the hips and rotate the trunk explosively to swing it up and across to the opposite side, pivoting the rear foot as you turn. Let the hips and core power the swing — the arms only steer. Decelerate the RAM under control at the top, then swing back through to the other side. Keep a strong, braced spine and a steady rhythm.
Common mistakes
- Swinging with the arms and shoulders instead of driving from the hips and trunk.
- Keeping the feet flat and grinding the rotation through the knees and lower back.
- Losing control of the RAM at the end ranges.
- Rounding or over-rotating the spine instead of pivoting through the hips.
Progressions and regressions
Regress to slower, smaller swings with light load, or to a half-kneeling chop, to learn the hip-driven rotation. Progress by adding load, increasing speed, or widening the range. Pivot the feet to protect the knees and let the hips do the turning.
Programming notes
Program it as rotational-power or conditioning work, 3-4 sets of 8-12 per side. It's excellent for rotational athletes (golf, tennis, baseball, combat sports). Keep the load moderate so the swing stays explosive and the spine stays safe.
